Royal palaces. Storybook villages. Ancient landmarks. Bustling cities. Centuries of history. And, yes, a little Harry Potter magic.
England has a way of blending the old and the new unlike almost anywhere else. You can stand outside a palace in the morning, walk streets that are hundreds of years old in the afternoon, and end the day surrounded by the energy of modern London.
For a first visit, seven days gives you enough time to experience London while venturing beyond the city to discover some of the places that make England unforgettable.
Here is a sample 7-day England itinerary combining history, iconic sights, countryside and a little magic along the way.
Arrive in London and give yourself time to settle in and get acquainted with the city.
Take a walk along the Thames, catch your first glimpse of Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, wander through Westminster, or simply find a traditional pub and enjoy your first evening in England.
Don't Miss: Big Ben • Westminster • Thames River • Traditional British pub
Today is all about some of London's most recognizable landmarks.
See Buckingham Palace, stroll through St. James's Park and explore Westminster before making your way toward Trafalgar Square and Covent Garden.
Depending on the day and season, you may even be able to catch the Changing of the Guard.
Don't Miss: Buckingham Palace • St. James's Park • Westminster Abbey • Covent Garden
Dive deeper into London's fascinating—and sometimes dark—history.
Visit the Tower of London, see the Crown Jewels and learn about the kings, queens, prisoners and legends connected to this nearly 1,000-year-old fortress.
Then walk across Tower Bridge and spend some time exploring along the Thames.
Don't Miss: Tower of London • Crown Jewels • Tower Bridge • Thames River
Leave London behind for one of England's most mysterious landmarks.
Standing in front of Stonehenge, it's hard not to wonder how—and why—this enormous prehistoric monument was created thousands of years ago.
Pair Stonehenge with time exploring the English countryside or another historic destination for a day that feels completely different from London.
Don't Miss: Stonehenge • English countryside • Historic villages
Even if you're only a casual Harry Potter fan, the Warner Bros. Studio Tour offers a fascinating look behind the scenes of the films.
Walk through the Great Hall, explore Diagon Alley, see original sets and props, and discover how some of the movies' most memorable scenes were created.
Back in London, Harry Potter fans can make another quick stop at King's Cross for the famous Platform 9¾.
Don't Miss: Great Hall • Diagon Alley • Hogwarts Express • Platform 9¾
Spend the day outside London exploring one of England's most famous university cities.
Oxford's historic colleges, cobblestone streets and incredible architecture make simply walking through the city part of the experience.
For a longer day trip, combine Oxford with time in the Cotswolds, where rolling countryside and honey-colored villages deliver that quintessential English charm.
Don't Miss: University of Oxford • Historic colleges • Cotswolds • English villages
Spend your final day checking off anything you missed—or revisit a favorite part of the city.
Shop along Regent Street, explore another neighborhood, enjoy afternoon tea, browse Borough Market or simply wander without an itinerary.
Because after a week in England, you may discover that some of your favorite moments weren't planned at all.
Get your UK travel authorization before you leave. U.S. citizens traveling to the UK for short visits generally need a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before traveling. Apply through the official UK government website or UK ETA app before your trip, and make sure you use the same passport you’ll travel with. An approved ETA is electronically linked to your passport, so there’s no separate document to carry. UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)
Then continue with:
Don't overpack your days. London looks compact on a map, but getting between attractions takes time—and you'll want time to explore along the way.
Bring comfortable shoes. You'll probably walk much more than you expect.
Book major attractions early. Popular tours and experiences, including the Warner Bros. Studio Tour, can sell out well in advance.
Plan for the weather. Layers and a lightweight rain jacket are useful even when the forecast looks promising.
Leave London. London deserves several days, but England is much more than its capital. Even one or two day trips can completely change the experience.
Seven days is a great introduction, especially for a first visit.
We'd recommend spending several days experiencing London and using the remaining time to explore beyond the city. Stonehenge, Oxford, the Cotswolds and other destinations can be visited as day trips, allowing you to keep London as your home base.
Have more time? Even better.
Add Bath, Stratford-upon-Avon, Windsor, York or more of the English countryside and turn your first taste of England into a much bigger adventure.
That's the beauty of a custom itinerary: the trip should fit the traveler, not the other way around.
England isn't just one experience.
It's standing in front of Buckingham Palace and realizing you've seen it in photographs your entire life. It's walking through centuries of history, seeing Stonehenge rise out of the countryside, hearing the stories behind the Tower of London and discovering tiny streets and neighborhoods you didn't even know were on your itinerary.
And sometimes, it's stepping onto a Harry Potter set and feeling like a kid again.
Royal traditions. Timeless charm & magic. Centuries of history.
England is calling.
